Life Member Inductee

A surprised Debra Farrell was awarded Life Membership of the Katunga Football Netball Club at the club’s presentation evening, after being lured to the event under the impression that one of her sons was receiving a special award.

The honour recognises almost four decades of outstanding service, commitment, and dedication to the club across both netball and football.

Deb’s involvement with Katunga began in 1987 when she joined the Katunga Netball Club as a player. Representing the club through to 1991, she quickly established herself as a talented and highly respected player. Her achievements on court were highlighted in 1989 when she won both the Picola Netball Association A Grade Best and Fairest and the Katunga Netball Club A Grade Best and Fairest awards — a remarkable accomplishment that reflected both her ability and sportsmanship.

Her contribution to the club soon extended beyond playing. In just her second season, Farrell stepped into coaching and enjoyed immediate success, guiding the JJ’s (15 & Under) team to back-to-back premierships in 1988 and 1989. Those successes reflect her ability to mentor young players, build strong team cultures, and inspire those around her to achieve their best.

As daughters Leah, Ashley and Heather became involved with the club between 2004 and 2013, Deb’s commitment only grew. Deb’s contribution only grew. Coaching all three daughters, like so many great club people, she was always willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed. Whether it was as catering coordinator, assisting teams, helping at events, supporting committee initiatives, or simply being a dependable presence around the club, Deb could always be counted on.

During this period, she also returned to the court in 2003, 2004, and 2007, providing valuable experience, leadership, and support to developing teams. Deb’s passion for netball also saw her become a respected umpire. In 2008, she formalised her commitment by obtaining her C Grade Umpiring Badge, although she had already spent many years volunteering her time with the whistle in hand and as the umpiring coordinator. She regularly officiated matches for Katunga and generously made herself available for league finals, particularly within the North West division, during a time when qualified umpires were often difficult to find. Her willingness to step up and support the game ensured countless matches could proceed and demonstrated her commitment not just to our club, but to netball across the league.

As her sons Jackson and Aiden began their football journeys with the Swans from 2018, Deb once again adapted her involvement to meet the needs of the club and her family. While continuing to umpire netball through 2018 and 2019, she transitioned into football goal umpiring in 2021 and then joined the trainers team in 2022. What is perhaps most remarkable is the way Deb has so often juggled multiple roles at once. There were many occasions where she has attended training nights to assist players, worked as a trainer during junior football on game-day mornings, and then took her place as a goal umpire for senior football later that same day. She has also repeatedly made herself available at short notice to help strap netballers during pre-season and throughout the year, ensuring players received the support they needed whenever they needed it.

Across nearly 40 years, Deb has contributed to this club in almost every way imaginable: as a player, award winner, premiership coach, umpire, trainer, volunteer, supporter, and tireless club person. Through every chapter of her involvement, she has demonstrated the qualities that define Life Membership: loyalty, dedication, commitment, and an unwavering dedication to the Katunga Football Netball Club.

Deb has given her time, energy, and expertise to support generations of players and families. For all of these reasons, Debra Farrell is a truly worthy and deserving recipient of Life Membership of the Katunga Football Netball Club.
